There’s a lot of noise out there when it comes to labour and birth—stories from friends, dramatic TV scenes, Google searches at 2am. It can leave you feeling unsure of what’s real, what’s normal, and what to expect. As a midwife, I want know 3 things:
Labour Takes Time (and That’s Normal)
One of the biggest surprises for women is just how long labour can be — especially your first baby. It’s not a quick, linear process. It builds slowly, often over many hours, sometimes even days. Early labour can feel confusing. You might wonder, “Is this it?”
Then things ease off… then build again. This is your body preparing. It’s not failing. It’s not “too slow.”
It’s doing exactly what it needs to do. When you understand this, you stop fighting the timeline — and start working with your body instead.
It’s Intense—But It’s Not Endless
Yes, labour is intense. There’s no point sugar-coating that. But intensity in labour has a purpose. Every contraction is working with your body to bring your baby closer to you. And here’s what matters most:
It comes in waves.
There are breaks. There are pauses. There is space to breathe, reset, and gather yourself again. You are not in constant pain—you are moving through powerful, purposeful surges that your body is designed to handle.
Your Mind Matters More Than You Think
Fear and tension can make labour feel harder. Confidence, support, and understanding can completely change your experience. When you know what’s happening in your body, when you feel safe, when you have the right support around you—you cope differently. You move differently. You birth differently. This is why education and continuity of care matter so much.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
One of the most powerful things in labour is feeling supported. Having someone who knows you, understands your preferences, and can guide you through each stage makes a huge difference—not just physically, but emotionally. This is where many women realise that birth isn’t just about getting through it…
it’s about how they feel while they’re doing it.
And Here’s the Most Important Part: You Can Do This!
Your body was designed for this. That doesn’t mean it’s easy.
That doesn’t mean it always goes to plan. But it does mean you are capable.
Even in the moments where you think, “I can’t do this anymore”—that’s often the moment you are closest to meeting your baby. You are stronger than you think.
More capable than you realise.
And you don’t have to be fearless—you just need the right support.
Final Thoughts
Labour isn’t about perfection. It’s not about ticking boxes or having a “perfect birth.” It’s about feeling informed, supported, and empowered. When you understand that labour may be longer, more intense—but also completely doable—you walk into birth differently.
Calmer.
Stronger.
Ready.
And that changes everything.
